Dating Old Photographs
The identification and dating of old photographs
is an exciting way to expand your genealogical research. By
examining the old photographs in your collection you can put
your research into context. Perhaps you can even identify some
previously unidentified family members.
Fieldstone Historic Research can assist in
dating your old photographs. Each photograph will be examined
to determine the closest possible date the photo was taken.
The photograph will be reviewed for
the type of photo and photo process that
was
used
or whether
the
image
is a copy
of an
original. Careful attention will be paid to the clothing, hairstyles
and props to determine its age.
You will receive an individual 1-2 page analysis
for each photograph you submit for identification. The document
will
include a comprehensive summary of the photo type and the results
of analysis.
How specific will the date of the photo be?
Sometimes a photo can be dated within a
year of its creation and other times within 10 years based
on how much information is
available
from the photo itself.
Photos of babies are difficult to date as can be photos of
children. Also, portraits of men without any props in the photo
lend themselves to a more general date. The more clothing that
is visible, along with props and photographers marks all lend
themselves to a more precise dating of a photograph.
